Thursday, January 10, 2013 - 8:57pm

A small film from Louisiana has made a big impression ever since it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival last year. “Beasts of the Southern Wild” has been nominated for four categories in the 85th Annual Academy Awards.

This is the first film for director Benh Zeitlin and it tells the story of an 6-year-old girl from New Orleans. The idea for the project came when Zeitlin was crashing on a friend’s floor in New Orleans six-months after Hurricane Katrina. He has lived in the city ever since.

The categories and nominees were announced on Thursday, Jan. 10. “Beasts of the Southern Wild” is nominated for Best Picture, Best Director (Behn Zeitlin), Best Actress in a Lead Role (Quvenzhane Wallis) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Behn Zeitlin).

The 85th Annual Academy Awards will air on February 24.

The American Red Cross will host a benefit Academy Award viewing party that night in New Orleans. The show will be telecast on large screens at 333 Canal Street. The event will begin at 5:00 p.m. Click here for ticket information.
