As Hurricane Season approaches, AARP Louisiana is encouraging people to take an active role in their family’s emergency planning and attend Game Day—an hour long emergency planning exercise that helps participants design a simple, easy-to-follow plan.

“Game Day is all about having an emergency plan that you can follow before disaster strikes,” said Nancy McPherson, State Director, AARP Louisiana. “We readily think about evacuating, storing water and batteries, and securing our homes during hurricane season. But emergency planning involves much more and oftentimes we overlook the details.”

“The Red Cross encourages everyone to develop a preparedness plan, and Game Day will provide a great opportunity to do just that,” said Mary McMinn, Executive Director at American Red Cross of Central Louisiana. “Participants will learn how to respond to a variety of emergency situations, and how to formulate a personalized plan.”

During the hour-long exercise, participants will learn about evacuating, sheltering-in-place and how to prepare their home for emergencies.

Participants will leave with a personal Game Plan –a book that includes details such as what to pack if you’re evacuating, what medicines and important documents you should take with you, and what route you should take if you are evacuating.

The Game Plan is a take home guidebook for folks to use throughout the year. Participants are asked to bring their address book as well as a list of all current medications for the guidebook.
