The city of Vidalia in conjunction with Nexus Systems has partnered with The Motive Group to conduct a feasibility study regarding offering the most advanced and future proof video, high-speed Internet and telephone services to its customers over a fiber optic network.

SDS Research will begin contacting citizens by telephone on Monday, Aug. 5, to gather feedback on the readiness of the community to purchases these services from a new provider.

Other electric utilities across the country have begun providing these advanced services as a bundle, while using the fiber optic infrastructure to enhance their electric service and provide smart grid capabilities. In addition to the entertainment value, the ultra high-speed data service is a critical component in attracting new business to communities and enhancing education. The potential partnership with Nexus Systems would allow the city to use the infrastructure to improve services, while allowing an experienced partner to be a provider of telecommunications services.

It is important to the city to get citizen feedback. “We always want to be good stewards of our resources,” said Mayor Hyram Copeland. “If our customers want a new option for these services, and it is financially feasible, then we will continue this study.”

SDS Research, an independent firm, will be conducting the research. The Mayor hopes citizens will take time to participate in this survey as well and provide useful information for planning Vidalia’s future.
