Baton Rouge, La — Louisiana is getting into the bill collecting business.
Tens of millions owed to the state could soon be coming back to it, thanks to the newly created Department of Debt Recovery.
Treasurer John Kennedy has been trying for years to get the department up and running.
Now that it's finally happened, he says the state will start seeing money roll in within the next few months.
"We're geared up, and ready to go. You're going to start seeing extra money rolling in this calendar year,” stated Kennedy. “You're going to see extra money rolling in without raising taxes, and that's a rarity these days."
The IRS said that the department could reign in over $200 million in unpaid debts; Kennedy told us he's pretty sure that number could be even higher.
