National Guard Youth Foundation hosts benefit to help program geared to helping at risks teens

Monday, July 2, 2012 - 12:19am

The National Guard Youth Foundation hosted it's second annual Youth Challenge Gala in Baton Rouge.

The event co-chaired by Senator Mary Landrieu, D-La., helps raise money for the Louisiana Youth Challenge program on Saturday.

Youth challenge is a 17 month voluntary program. The goal of the program is to help at risk kids who dropped out of school get their GED and teach them skills they can use to get a job.

John Thompson graduated from the program. He said," School is not a one glove fits all. Some people need different direction, motivation or purposes and it provides all three."

"We work on their education, but also one of the big benefits is the life coping skills they get out of it," said Brig. Gen. Glenn Curtis, Adjutant General for Louisiana. "It makes them a complete person. Gets them ready to face adulthood. "

Money raised from the benefit will go towards scholarship opportunities for graduates as well as funding for classroom materials.
