NATCHEZ, MISS — Natchez area business and community leaders believe Natural Resources tops the list of opportunities for future economic growth in their area, according to a Jan. 22, 2014 survey.
The survey was part of the Mississippi Economic Council’s Blueprint Mississippi Pathway to Progress Tour that traveled to 19 cities in all regions of Mississippi over the last four months. Through an electronic response process, participants were able to provide instant feedback on issues facing their region and the state as a whole.
Blueprint Mississippi, the state’s long-term strategic action plan, was released in January 2012 with nine goals and 33 recommendations. Attendees of the Natchez Tour stop were polled on which Blueprint Mississippi goals should be considered top priorities. Responses were spread amongst multiple topics, with 23 percent indicating that educational achievement was the top priority and 19 percent voting economic competitiveness as a close second.
Attendees also weighed in strongly on economic development issues, with 85 percent indicating that career and technical education was of major importance in meeting future workforce needs. Transportation infrastructure was also a significant concern, with over 86 percent ranking it very important to growing Mississippi’s economy.
MEC President Blake Wilson said, “Leaders in Natchez are in line with other leaders throughout Mississippi in their ranking of important economic development issues. What we found particularly encouraging in Natchez was the great optimism about the direction the state is moving, and we look forward to continued partnerships from this area of the state.”
The MEC Blueprint Mississippi Pathway to Progress Tour was held in 19 cities across Mississippi, with nearly 2,000 business and community leaders attending. It began in Columbus on Nov. 19, 2013 and ended in Laurel on March 4, 2014. The Blueprint Mississippi Pathway to Progress Tour was made possible by a generous sponsorship from Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi.
