A well-known Lafayette comic book artist is hoping to help other artists get and keep jobs here at home.

"Artists want to be around other artists. Writers want to be around writers, and people kind of flock to that," Kody Chamberlain said.

That's why dozens gathered at the Art Council of Greater Baton Rouge.

"It's great for networking, and it's great to help build the scene because one of the things that's important to me is to help establish a great creative scene in South Louisiana," Chamberlain said.

A scene Chamberlain knows well. He's an artist and his specialty is comic books. He's worked for big names, like D.C. and Marvel comics. Now, he's taken his skills back home. His goal is to keep artists here in south Louisiana.

"A lot of our best talent packs up and goes to Los Angeles, Austin or New York," Chamberlain said. "One of the main reasons for that is obviously there are opportunities there that we don't have here, but I think the main reason people do it is the scene."

Chamberlain said this is the way to do that.

"It's really not just about raising awareness of you or the work," Chamberlain said. "It's also about making those connections that can sort of fuel projects and fuel other people to get inspired with this stuff."

That's why Godric Johnson's here. He's a video game designer and a little more than a year ago, he just started his own company.

"I learned a lot actually. He confirmed a lot of things that I already hold true to myself everyday," Godric said. "Networking with other artists to try to get more collaborative groups together, such as this event right here. It was awesome. It was amazing. I loved it."

The art community may be small here in South Louisiana, but Johnson said that doesn't matter.

"I'd rather do something I love and grind and struggle and eventually make it, then have my lifeforce sucked away working at a deadend, deadbeat job," Johnson stated.
