BATON ROUGE, La. (WVLA) — What if you knew you wanted to give back this season but couldn't financially? Well, did you get some gift cards to a store or two you that you're sure you'll never use? Stop right there.
"You name it, whatever it may be, instead of re-gifting it, gift it to the charity of your choice," says Michael Acaldo, the Executive Director of The Society of St. Vincent De Paul.
Just like that, you can donate your unwanted, not so perfect gift cards or gift card balances of any amount from any store, to charity.
"We want to make sure that people know that that's an avenue out there," says Acaldo.
If you have receipts for the cards or returns, don't throw them away just yet-because with that donation you're actually gaining something yourself.
"Oh yeah, it’s all tax deductible," noted Acaldo.
You might be asking why an organization that helps the homeless would use a pet store gift card. Well, they would go online to numerous websites and resell the gift card for cash that they can use. Before you donate, go to charity navigator.com. It’s a website that allows you to see where your funds are really going within each organization.
But gift cards are not the only things you can donate this holiday season.
"Someone might get a book they already have and don't want to bring it back to the book store they might get a sweater that looks great but just isn't there right style. Someone could use it to stay warm on a cold winter day," Acaldo tells NBC33.
And with the growing need for community support at charitable organizations across the country, this is just another way you can give a little more.
Only minutes before NBC33 talked with St. Vincent De Paul they received a call from someone who wanted to donate their $500 gift card to help the shelter.
