NEW ORLEANS, LA — Police have named the suspect they believe to be responsible for the shooting on Mother’s Day at a Second Line parade that injured 19 people.
The New Orleans Police Department has issued a warrant for the arrest of Akein Scott, 19. Investigators searched two of his known locations on Monday, May 13, but did not locate him. Now’ they’re making an appeal for Scott to turn himself in.
“Akein Scott needs to do the right thing, and turn himself in,” Superintendent Ronal Serpas, NOPD, said. “What happened Sunday was an atrocity, and we want to make sure that everyone who took part in that violence faces consequences of the criminal justice system.”
Serpas noted that Scott was identified due to multiple witness testimonies. They say he has multiple prior arrests including Illegal Carrying of a Weapon, Illegal Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Resisting an Officer, Contraband to Jail, Illegal Carrying of a Weapon While in Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance and Possession of Heroin.
Officials have not yet ruled out the possibility of additional gunmen.
“The investigation is still active, as it’s not yet been determined whether Scott was the only person to fire a weapon at yesterday’s event,” a release notes. “Detectives continue to collect evidence, conduct interviews and have canvassed and re-canvassed the area where the shooting occurred in an effort to gather more information.”
