BATON ROUGE, La. (WGMB) — A report by The Times-Picayune Monday says LSU’s Kevin Gausman was heavily considering returning to college for his junior year.
Gausman would have to turn down around $4 million the Orioles will throw his way after drafting him fourth overall in the MLB Draft.
In the article, Gausman was quoted explaining his mindset. “This is turning out to be a tough decision, but as of now my heart is still with LSU,” he said.
Shortly after the report LSU head baseball coach, Paul Mainieri, released a statement concerning Gausman’s draft status.
“Kevin is still in negotiations with the Orioles, and any reports portraying his return to LSU as definite are premature," he says. "This is a monumental decision in Kevin’s life, and as much as we want him back with us, we also want him to do what is in his best interest. The signing deadline is at 4:00 p.m. Friday, so we’ll allow the process to play itself out until that time.”
Gausman went 12-2 in 17 starts last year with the Tigers.
