LAFAYETTE, La. (WGMB) — Brandon Scott Lavergne, 33, the man accused of killing Lisa Pate in 1999, and Mickey Shunick on May 19, has pleaded Not Guilty to First-Degree murder charges in both cases.
Our reporter in the Lafayette Parish Courthouse says, Lavergne was not present in court. Instead, he was in a private hearing room inside the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. Members of the media and family members of Mickey Shunick were able to watch everything unfold on a television screen.
We're told Lavergne was kept inside the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center because of safety concerns.
When Brandon Scott Lavergne entered his Not Guilty plea, we're told he did so with no emotion at all. However, Mickey Shunick's family cringed when they heard his plea. Mickey's parents, Tom and Nancy, and her sister, Charlie were in court with Josh Coen who's a friend of their family.
By October 9, 2012, we're told any motions will have to be filed with the court system. Once all the motions are filed, we're told a court hearing can be scheduled.
