LOUISIANA (KMSS) — Back-to-school shopping season is always a big boost for local retailers, but add a sales tax holiday to that equation, and what do you get? "It's bigger than Black Friday," said Abdul Alqan, who manages Dollar Mania in Bossier City. "It's gotten much bigger in the last few years," he said.
Beginning midnight on Friday, Louisiana shoppers were able to save 4 percent off the state sales tax. That savings includes back-to-school items like educational supplies, clothing and electronics, but also covers purchases such as furniture and housewares. Not included in the holiday? Meals, taxable services, and vehicles.
Louisana's sales tax holiday ended midnight on Sunday. Arkansas' lasted from Saturday until Sunday, and Texans will get their shot at savings August 17-19.
