Jags go through a "polished" first practice
BATON ROUGE, LA — The Southern football team started fall training camp Thursday. The players went though a conditioning test in the morning followed by a practice in the afternoon. "I thought we did some good things," head coach Dawson Odums said after practice. He described the first day as "polished."
Preseason All-SWAC pick Virgil Williams didn't participate. His absence wasn't injury related and Odums expects his top defensive back to be ready Friday.
Dray Joseph took all the reps behind center with the first team. Freshman quarterback Deonte Shorts worked mostly with the second team.
Former LSU commitment Chuck Baker from Salmen was working with the wide receivers. Former LSU offensive lineman Corey White from Capital is a new addition to the Jags interior.
Speedy receiver Willy Quinn was back with the team after failing to qualify last season.
Southern will hold their second practice Friday at 4 p.m.
When asked why his team practiced in the late afternoon heat Odums responded, “we don’t play games in the morning.”
