BIRMINGHAM — LSU senior right-hander Rachele Fico picked up the first SEC Pitcher of the Week award of the season Monday as announced by the league office. It marks the third career weekly award for Fico and her first selection since her freshman season.
Fico tossed two shutouts, tallied a 0.41 ERA and racked up 20 strikeouts over her 17.0 innings of work. The 2013 All-SEC Preseason Team and USA Softball Player of the Year Top 50 finalist secured victories over No. 22 North Carolina and Tulsa, a pair of NCAA Regional and 40-win programs from last season.
Fico’s effort during the Tulsa game was masterful where she retired 11 of the first 12 batters she faced and sat down 11 of the final 12 hitters that came to the plate. Her 14 strikeouts versus the Golden Hurricane was the second-highest output of her career only behind her 18 Ks against Syracuse at the 2011 NCAA College Station Regional. The Connecticut native enters this week’s action 16 Ks away from becoming the fifth pitcher in program history to reach 600 career strikeouts.
“We’re very excited for Rachele, and this is a well-deserved award for her,” head coach Beth Torina said. “She put together a really solid opening weekend against some quality competition. We can expect to see those types of performances from her all season long like we have in the past. There’s no doubt that she’s our workhorse and been a special pitcher that has been so reliable for us.”
