LSU DE Montgomery earned SEC defensive lineman of the week
BATON ROUGE — Not that Sam Montgomery needs extra motivation but Saturday’s contest against South Carolina provided plenty of it.
“There were so many other things to play for other than just to play the game,” Montgomery said.
The Greenwood, South Carolina native wanted bragging rights of course. Many of his childhood friends were on the other sideline.
"He was really pumped up last week. He wanted it and as a defense we really wanted it for him so we played for him," junior defensive end Barkevious Mingo said.
“He was captain of the team (Saturday). He played big and he was Sam," LSU head coach Les Miles said just minutes after the Tigers knocked off the third ranked Gamecocks.
‘Sonic’ Sam didn’t disappoint. He finished the game with a forced fumble, three tackles and two sacks. One of those sacks came when it mattered most in the forth quarter on a pivotal third down play.
“All I know is from now on no matter what happens, I can always sit down on the porch and walk around the state of South Carolina and say the one time we played y’all I won. That's good enough for me," Montgomery said after the game.
But perhaps most importantly, for the first time this season one lady in particular was among the 90 thousand plus fans in Tiger Stadium. It was ‘Momma’ Montgomery, Debra.
“She is a great source for my inspiration. To see her great face I had to play for her. For me I was overwhelmed with energy and emotion.”
