We're no.1! LSU baseball ranked top team in newspaper poll

Monday, April 8, 2013 - 9:00pm

LSU is ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll released Monday. The Tigers (30-2, 11-1 SEC) have won 12 straight games, including nine consecutive SEC contests, and are tied with Vanderbilt for the overall conference lead.

LSU has a three-game advantage over Alabama and Arkansas in the SEC Western Division standings.

LSU and No. 10 Arkansas meet this weekend in a three-game league series beginning at 6:30 p.m. CT Friday at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville, Ark.

The 2013 club becomes the fourth LSU team to be ranked No. 1 during the seven-season tenure of coach Paul Mainieri. The 2012 squad held a No. 1 ranking twice, once in mid-April and once in early June. The 2009 team, which won the national championship, was ranked No. 1 in seven different weeks. The 2010 Fighting Tiger squad held a No. 1 ranking for three weeks.

“The No. 1 ranking is wonderful recognition for the accomplishments of our program this year,” Mainieri said, “but it brings a lot of responsibility. We’re not going to ask our players to change anything; we want them to continue to play with passion and have fun. It’s a great honor, but our goal is to be No. 1 at the end of the year.”

LSU’s next game is at 7 p.m. Tuesday, when the Tigers face Southern University in the annual Wally Pontiff Jr. Foundation Classic at Zephyr Field in Metairie, La.
